<idAbs>This polygon feature class represents the spatial extent and boundaries of the BLM National Landscape Conservation System (NLCS) Wilderness Study Areas. This state dataset may have published a dataset that is more current than the National dataset; there may be geometry variations between the state and national dataset which may have different results. The national dataset is updated following the data standard schedule.</idAbs>
<idPurp>This polygon feature class represents the spatial extent and boundaries of the BLM National Landscape Conservation System (NLCS) Wilderness Study Areas. The Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976 directed the Bureau to inventory and study its roadless areas for wilderness characteristics. To be designated as a Wilderness Study Area, an area has to have the following characteristics: Size - roadless areas of at least 5,000 acres of public lands or of a manageable size; Naturalness - generally appears to have been affected primarily by the forces of nature; Opportunities - provides outstanding opportunities for solitude or primitive and unconfined types of recreation. In addition, Wilderness Study Areas often have special qualities such as ecological, geological, educational, historical, scientific and scenic values.</idPurp>

<prcStep>
<stepDesc>Using the implementation guidelines, GIS staff at BLM field and state offices cross-walk and clean up their data to comply with the standardized national dataset. Then, the BLM field and/or state offices submit the data to the National Operations Center (NOC), where it is compiled to produce seamless national datasets. This process of data replication to the National Operations Center is intended to occur on a monthly basis.</stepDesc>
