<idAbs>Geologic coverage. Contains polygon boundaries between mappable geologic units and polygon codes for the mappable geologic units. Contains values for the Potential Fossil Yield Classification (PFYC) for ranking the potential of a geologic unit to produce scientifically significant fossils. Also contains fields for geologic ages and sort codes for sorting the units by time. Detailed documentation on the mapped units can be found in the accompanying state generated reports. Additional fields were added to the source data including earliest geologic age, latest geologic age, PFYC justification, PFYC rank (1-5), and a coded representation for the standardized BLM coloring scheme for PFYC maps.</idAbs>
<idPurp>The Potential Fossil Yield Classification (PFYC) system is a predictive model for areas that are likely to produce fossils of scientific interest. This model is used to evaluate potential impacts to fossils in ground-disturbing actions, or to help inform research.</idPurp>

<attrdef>Source map reference code. It is created by combining the 2 letter state code, the first 4 characters of the primary map author’s last name, plus the first and middle initial, plus the 4 digit year of publication. Example: MTHamiJA1960. If there are multiple source maps by the same author in the same year, append a letter after the year to differentiate between them. Example MTHamiJA1960a.</attrdef>

<attrlabl>GEO_CD</attrlabl>
<attrdef>Combined state, map reference, and geologic formation codes. It is created by combining the Map Reference Code (above) and the original geologic symbol. Example: MTHamiJA1960Kgr. This will automatically distinguish this map’s concept of Kgr from any other in the data set, giving a unique code for these units across the entire data set. By convention, the first letter of the geologic code from the source map will represent the rock unit’s geologic age. Occasionally the characters are not easily convertible alphanumeric characters. If that is the case, see Appendix 2 for recommended characters for the Geologic age portion of the code.</attrdef>
