The uniquely American idea of wilderness has become an increasingly significant tool to ensure long-term protection of natural landscapes. Wilderness protects the habitat of numerous wildlife species and serves as a biodiversity bank for many species of plants and animals. Wilderness is also a source of clean water. pointOfContact dataset Good Good This national dataset is an aggregation from multiple datasets provided by the BLM Administrative States, please contact the distributor for additional information on provenance, history, accuracy and quality of the data. The logical consistency of this dataset reflects that of the source datasets. Each source dataset is run through a series of tests to verify that the data complies with the format specified in the Data Standard. ERRORS AND INCONSISTENCIES MAY STILL BE PRESENT IN THE DATA. These tests were conducted using ESRI ArcMap 10.1. The tests consisted of checking coded values for attributes against a domain of accepted values, checking that alpha-numeric values followed a valid format, and checking that numeric values were greater than zero. For the geometry, the topology was validated; however overlaps and gaps can still be found. This national dataset is an aggregation from multiple datasets provided by the BLM Administrative States, please contact the distributor for additional information on provenance, history, accuracy and quality of the data. The completeness of this dataset reflects that of the source datasets. Using the implementation guidelines, GIS staff at BLM field and state offices cross-walk and clean up their data to comply with the standardized national dataset. Then, the BLM field and/or state offices submit the data to the National Operations Center (NOC), where it is compiled to produce seamless national datasets. This process of data replication to the National Operations Center is intended to occur on a monthly basis. As a result of the "John D. Dingell Jr. Conservation, Management, and Recreation Act", several new Wilderness areas were officially designated by congress. The boundaries for these Wilderness areas in the form of GIS Shapefiles had been approved by Congress for several years prior but as of yet had not been designated. Once the legislation passed, these Wilderness boundaries were compiled and included into the State wide corporate SDE database, in the NLCS_WLD feature dataset by the New Mexico State Office GIS group. The new wilderness boundaries included in the legislation are as follows: Rio San Antonio Wilderness, Cerro del Yuta Wilderness, Cinder Cone Wilderness, Whitehorn Wilderness, Aden Lave Flow Wilderness, Organ Mountains Wilderness, Rebledo Mountains Wilderness, Broad Canyon Wilderness, Sierra de las Uvas Wilderness, East Potrillo Mountains Wilderness, Mount Riley Wilderness, Potrillo Mountains Wilderness, Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah Wilderness and updates to the existing Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness. As part of the process of incorporating these new wilderness boundaries into the State wide dataset, all new wilderness boundaries were snapped to the latest version of the Public Land Survey System supplied by the Cadastral National Spatial Data Infrastructure (PLSS CadNSDI) Team which resulted in slightly different geometries and acreage calculations in comparison to the orignal congressional boundaries which were snapped to the older version of (PLSS GCDB) State GIS Manager Bureau of Land Management - New Mexico State Office Geosciences Team Lead 505-954-2000
