This polygon feature class represents the spatial extent and boundaries for BLM Wild Horse and Burro Herd Area polygons. BLM Wild Horse and Burro Herd Areas have been designated by The Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act of 1971 as areas that wild horses and burros appeared to be inhabiting. Herd areas were identified in 1971 but are not managed for wild horses or burros. Areas originally designated as Herd Areas also contain Herd Management Areas (HMAs). Management status can change based on changing conditions.
Data within these services are a live copy of BLM Utah's enterprise production environment. Quality control is conducted annually.
This polygon feature class shows the boundaries for BLM Wild Horse and Burro Herd Areas. These areas were designated in 1971 because of wild horse and/or burros were located in them. They were identified through initial flights over these areas. As additional surveys were done and data gathered, it was determined that some of these lands and animals were actually on private lands and/or were private animals. Areas with private animals that were "claimed" during the claiming period were not carried forward as Herd Areas. Herd Areas were carried forward in land use plans and determinations were made as to whether or not to manage animals on these federal lands.

Using the implementation guidelines, GIS staff at BLM field and state offices cross-walk and clean up their data to comply with the standardized national dataset. Then, the BLM field and/or state offices submit the data to the National Operations Center (NOC), where it is compiled to produce seamless national datasets. This process of data replication to the National Operations Center is intended to occur on a monthly basis.
