Service Description: Line features depicting the NLCS Wild and Scenic Rivers The Act provides three levels of protection: wild, scenic, and recreational. “Wild” rivers are free of dams, generally inaccessible except by trail, and represent vestiges of primitive America. “Scenic” rivers are free of dams, with shorelines or watersheds still largely primitive and shorelines largely undeveloped, but accessible in places by roads. “Recreational” rivers are readily accessible by road or railroad, may have some development along their shorelines, and may have been dammed in the past. This polygon feature class represents the spatial extent and boundaries of the BLM National Landscape Conservation System (NLCS) Wild and Scenic River Corridors. This state dataset may have published a dataset that is more current than the National dataset; there may be geometry variations between the state and national dataset which may have different results. The national dataset is updated following the data standard schedule.

Subject: Line features depicting the NLCS Wild and Scenic Rivers The feature class is related to the nlcs_wsr_orv_tbl (table) through the nlcs_wsr_orv_rel (relationship class). The Wild and Scenic River feature class includes selected rivers in the United States preserved for possessing outstandingly, remarkable scenic, recreational, geologic, fish and wildlife, historic, cultural, or other similar values. Rivers, or sections of rivers, so designated are preserved in their free-flowing condition and are not dammed or otherwise improved. Lines will be segmented when any of the attributes change (e.g. when the classification changes) or to capture changes in Outstanding Remarkable Values. Every segment must have at least one record in the related table, nlcs_wsr_orv_tbl. This polygon feature class represents the spatial extent and boundaries of the BLM National Landscape Conservation System (NLCS) Wild and Scenic River Corridors. The corridor is the official area that is managed to protect the outstandingly remarkable values of the Wild and Scenic River segment(s) it encompasses. Section 1(b) of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, (Pub. L. 90-543 as amended: 16 U.S.C. 1271-1287) identifies the ORVs in the following manner: “It is hereby declared to be the policy of the United States that certain selected rivers of the Nation which, with their immediate environments, possess outstandingly remarkable scenic, recreational, geologic, fish and wildlife, historic, cultural, or other similar values, shall be preserved in free flowing condition, and that they and their immediate environments shall be protected for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations.”
