Service Description: The content of this data includes Idaho recreation sites primarily representing BLM sites, but, as a result of requests from Field Office RECS and GIS staff during the initial statewide compilation / reconciliation process, this dataset also includes sites administered by Forest Service, IDFG, State, and a handful of other entities and organizations (see MNG_AGCY field). Only sites administered by BLM are replicated to the NOC as part of the national replication / compilation process.

Subject: Formerly published as REC_NOC_NLCSRecreationSites_PUB_24K_POINT
The intent of this dataset is to depict Idaho recreation sites (i.e., point features) from a multi-jurisdictional perspective. The multi-agency approach was requested by Field Office RECS and GIS staff during the initial statewide compilation / reconciliation process. Hence, this feature class includes sites administered by the BLM, Forest Service, IDFG, Idaho State, and a handful of other entities and organizations. See the MNG_AGCY field to identify and filter for the agency of choice. This data represents the second iteration of the BLM Interim Recreation Sites Data Standard (i.e., Version 1.2). The general types of recreation sites targeted by this data standard include information center sites, water-based sites, overnight sites, day use sites, restrooms, water access, recreational access, parking areas, airplane landing strips, campgrounds, OHV designated areas, recreation management areas, natural/endangered areas, etc. Following an attempt at integrating a new compilation dataset into the NOC replication infrastructure, it came to light that there was quite a bit more to the on-the-ground technical implementation than what was described in the RECS Interim Data Standard v1.1. Evidently, a series of fields supporting an NLCS web display functionality were operating in the background (these infrastructure protocols were intended to support NLCS-centric directives conceived of and implemented early in the national data standard development process). This realization initiated a drive at the NOC to document and integrate the NLCS-related needs, thus resulting in Interim Standard v1.2. For more information on the NLCS component, see the metadata Process Step from 07/27/2018. At the time of this documentation (03/29/2019), the final data standard was nearing completion. Comments were submitted on 11/28/2018 as part of a formal data standard review period. The participants in the review included the two state leads, the State Data Administrator, and the Sprint GIS Specialist. Concerns highlighted in the comments included the practicality of maintaining an NLCS component (i.e., the only points on blm.gov/visit that stem from the geospatial dataset are represented by a limited number of the NLCS sites, while the majority of displayed place markers stem from RIDB), the general need to reconcile multiple overlapping systems of record, and the potentially onerous nature of certain new database schema implementations (e.g., apparent push to view sites as polygons, while identifying individual amenities using point features).
