description: CROSS_SECT_SAMPLE_PUB_PT: Cross-sectional surveys capture the shape of the stream channel at a specific location by measuring elevations at intervals across the channel. Cross-sections are used to determine bankfull width, mean bankfull depth, and entrenchment of a channel at a specific point. Cross-sections are usually installed and monitored to track geomorphic change in a stream before and after a physical alteration to the channel; these surveys can detect erosion and deposition of stream sediment as well as changes to the shape (profile) of stream bed and banks. The cross-section table defined in this data standard stores the summary measurements. Raw data can be stored in a spreadsheet or document and related to the record.
