Service Description: This service provides the spatial extent and boundaries for BLM Utah Wild Horse and Burro Herd Management Areas, as well as Wild Horse and Burro Herd Areas. BLM Wild Horse and Burro Herd Areas have been designated by The Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act of 1971 as areas that wild horses and burros appeared to be inhabiting. Federal lands identified in 1971 but not managed for wild horses and burros are called Herd Areas. Originally designated Herd Areas contain Herd Management Areas. Management status can change based on changing conditions.

BLM Wild Horse and Burro Herd Management Areas are congressionally-designated areas of land to which specific laws and regulations pertaining to the management of wild horses and burros are applied. All Herd Management Areas need to be contained within an originally designated Herd Area. Management status can change based on changing conditions. The Bureau uses the term Herd Management Area; the Forest Service uses the term Wild Horse Territory.
